I choose happiness. (unedited)

I don't know if Mercury is in Retrograde or what this week but I feel as if there's a lot of communication drop outs and negativity swirling around me. I looked it up...it isn't. (For the record, it starts again on 5/19 so get ready!) When plans go awry and the world seems turned upside down, I follow one simple rule.

What does this mean you ask? And where's today's fashion post?

My April...depicted via Instagram.

April was a busy month! And it flew by! More often than not, I was creating posts at night and cramming in last minute work when the girls went down. I suspect this will be my life for awhile but I can't complain. I mixed business with pleasure and a spoonful of fashion and friends. Life is good...as depicted by my April Insta collage.

101 Eats: Fresha | a healthier alternative. (+ a giveaway!)

If you're like me...lunch is either: A. in the car or B. rushed. Or wait, C. both! The struggle is real, my friends. What's worse than a lunch that provokes the 3pm slump at your desk? You know what I'm talking about. You chose unwisely and ate a carb laden, ridiculously portioned meal that made you want to pull a Costanza once you returned to the office.

Does that only happen to me?

The thing about girlfriends.

On the subject of girlfriends. With so much change in 2015, it's only fitting that I acknowledge the importance of my girlfriends. This especially resonated for me this week after editing a piece for a client of mine.

My client is a savvy 70-year old grandma who always has a few "isms" to share. It got me thinking about my own girls. Everyone knows my husband is my rock but there are some things only a woman can relate to.

What's in a name?

Birthing anything is a long, arduous process. Human being or business, there are some similar emotions I went through. Nerves, stress, laughter, fear, anxiety, pride, strength and even weakness. Just to name a few...

Now that we're in the swing of it and moving at crazy speeds is the new norm; I can now look back and say that creating a brand was far more difficult than the day-to-day roller coasters. So far. Perhaps that's the reason I started this whole thing - something to do with thriving off change.

I'm referencing this post and how this whole 'Oak St. Social' came about! I get asked about our name and what it means at every meeting I go on. Well, today I'm giving you the back story...

Accessorizing your work life.

Just like anything in life, an organized home office leads to a more productive Johanna. I can say this having worked from home over the last 12 years. The brighter, more vibrant my work accessories are...the happier I am. Dare I say that I am more efficient with colorful pens, notebooks and coasters?!

The fact is, working from home can feel somewhat like an isolated island. That's why it's important for me to have fun in the process and most importantly, stay inspired. Colors do me good! Especially now that I've started my own brand.

I quit my job. (and why it was worth the risk)

"Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will."

As a young girl, I was acutely aware of the fact that I wanted to be the boss. I saw my dad work tirelessly at his business and in turn, my family reaped the benefits of his work ethic. We attended great schools, traveled abroad and had the ability to pursue our passions be it tennis, soccer or ballet.

Fast forward to the present tense. I've had more career highs than career lows but none of that was based on luck or hand outs. It's because I knew, albeit a bit of an old school philosophy, that if I worked hard at anything the rewards would soon follow. And they did.

Staying toasty (and green!) with Marley Coffee.

Last week I had the absolute pleasure in co-hosting a media event with my pal, Alison of Sassy Moms in the City, and a very special brand - Marley Coffee. It was the right fit from the start given my daily caffeine consumption. I completely respect a brand that not only has heritage but has introduced the EcoCup capsule which is a green alternative to the K-Cup you're used to seeing on the shelves.

Marley Coffee was founded by son of Bob Marley, Rohan Marley, in 1999. The farm is located in the Jamaica Blue Mountains and the goal was simple: support local farmers, the economy and the environment.

I suppose I could always be a little more eco-conscious, however it's the small things that create maximum impact, right? Well, here's a scary fact - over 10 billion single cup capsules are consumed and go into landfills annually. That's just for North America which is enough to circle the earth 12 times!
