5 must-have layering pieces

When it comes to transitioning into another season, I find that Midwesterners really get the short end of the stick. Particularly in Chicago. One day it's 45 and the next day it's -2. There's an old joke that goes something like this: "You know you're a Chicagoan if you turn on your AC in the morning and your heat by the evening." I'm anticipating this in about another 30 days.

The great thing about fluctuating temps is that it forces us fashionistas to take a long, hard look at our closets. It's also the perfect opportunity to perfect our layering skills. Today, I've rounded up my top five layering pieces to help you gracefully enter a new season of fashion...snow, sleet, rain or shine! (and here are five skirts you need in your closet right now!)

one | Rag & Bone: The vest. I'm a late bloomer but after I got my hands on this one - it was game over. Looks sexy with a tee, alone, with a denim blouse...the list goes on. It's that one piece that won't make you sweat to death if the sun decides to shine but will also keep you cozy for dinners alfresco. I love it over a maxi dress, too!

two | Otto d'ame: The trench. If you don't have a trench coat, it's time to make that happen. Every classy lady has a trench. Looks just as chic with denim and converse sneakers as it does over a LBD. There are literally 100's of choices on the market at all different price points. Get one!

three | Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent: The light weight knit. I love this crochet number because it would rock over a silk blouse or a tank. You could even wear it solo with a pretty, lace bra. It has all sorts of potential and the fitted shape prevents any frumpiness you may encounter with heavier knits. You could also double this as a beach cover up and channel your boho side.

four | Elizabeth and James: The crop top. Little curve ball here for ya. A crop top is an excellent layering piece over collared shirts. Bonus: you don't have to bare your midriff, either. A printed crop top is the easiest item to remix...simply switch out the foundation and you have an entirely new outfit.

five | ANINE BING: The cargo jacket. This year I fell in love with outerwear and the cargo jacket is top of my list. Pair it with the unexpected - dainty dresses, overalls, work trousers - any ultra feminine piece will do. And let's face it, it's the most fashionable jacket to sport on the weekends making you look pulled together even when you don't feel like it.

Happy shopping! xo
