6 spring travel essentials.

Sometimes it feels like you need superpowers to pack your kids and yourself up for a trip. We all know that basics are essential but still never know quite what to bring. It’s the disease of overpacking that plagues us all. As I get ready for my upcoming trip to Portugal, I’ve found myself strategically planning out what items to take with and what outfits I could wear without bringing my entire closet. In this short guide, I’ll share my travel essentials along with some tips and tricks to make consolidating <a little> easier. These items travel with me no matter what climate we encounter because they are universally essential for hotel pools to walking on cobblestone streets. Take it from me…I’ve made the mistakes for you!

  1. Packing Cubes - Not only will this save you space in your luggage, but it will also save your sanity. It’ll be easier to organize and find the things you’re looking for when you arrive. No more panic attacks when you can’t find your favorite piece of jewelry and it’s a must-have when traveling with kids because they can independently select their outfits each day.

  2. A go-to pair of shoes - A classic pair of espadrilles or comfy sandals will be your savior for days in the sun. Not only do they look great with casual daytime outfits, but they transition well for evening or if you even want to bring them to chill poolside.

  3. Solid color maxi dresses - This one might be basic, but solid maxis will never go out of style for trips. They make great, easy outfits, but can also double as a pool/beach cover-up. <PRO TIP: For colder evenings, throw on a pull-over and your maxi will give the illusion of a skirt. 2 outfits in 1>

  4. Crossbody - Don’t make the mistake of overpacking handbags. Choose a solid color, medium size, crossbody (like the one from Madewell I chose below) to fit sunglasses, a lip balm, your phone, and small wallet. Only the essentials when you’re out and about and forget the flashy jewelry!

  5. Transitional Clutch - It’s a no-brainer, but a clutch is the easiest way to look more put-together at any time of the day. A cute clutch is essential for night time outfits, and you won’t have to worry about carrying too much around. Pick-pockets exist everywhere!

  6. Staple Swimsuits - We tend to waaay overpack for warm weather trips. Select 2-3 flattering styles that you know fit well and more importantly, that you can move in! Mom life requires more sand castles and trips to the bathroom than sunning pool side. A suit that doesn’t slip is essential.

I hope this guide makes packing your next trip smooth sailing. Bon Voyage!
