How do you style your maxi dress for Fall?

Maxi dresses. They're comfortable and you can style them so many ways. I have a few that I think I can transition into Fall. Problem is I am stumped. As in "fashion stumped". I sought inspiration on Pinterest and found the above.

When I look at these pictures I think "Duh!" {slaps palm to forehead} But then Monday comes and I stare at my dresses wondering how to style them so it doesn't appear like my dress is eating me.

What's wrong with me? Have I lost my fashion mojo due to lack of sleep?
